Kendall Family Genealogy

Research and speculation about the Kendall Families of Ringwood, Hampshire.

I've set up this web space to share my research into and speculation about the Kendall family of Ringwood, Hampshire.

My grandfather, Edward Alexander Kendall, was born in Ringwood in 1910. Edward's parents were Charles William Kendall and Rose Maud Gordge. Charles died a few months after Edward's birth, and Rose took Edward to Devon. He never knew his father's family.

Using census, parish and other records that I found online, and by visiting Ringwood and the Hampshire Records Office in Winchester, I was eventually able to trace Charles and his family.

In doing so, I wound up accounting for almost every Kendall in Ringwood at the time!

Charles was born in Sandford, Hampshire in 1856. His parents were John Kindle and Elizabeth (née Rogers).

John was an Agricultural Labourer, born in 1827 in Ringwood parish. Elizabeth Rogers was born in 1831 in Poulner. They were married in Ringwood in 1852 and had 11 children. John died in 1908 and Elizabeth died in 1915. They are buried at the Crowe Hill Methodist Church.

John’s parents were Stephen Kindle and Sarah (née Head). Stephen was born in 1791 in Ringwood parish, and Sarah was born in 1796 in Ibsley. They married in 1817 in Ibsley and had 10 children. Stephen was an also an Agricultural Labourer. He died in 1867 and Sarah died in 1886. They are buried at the Bisterne Chapel.

Stephen’s parents were Thomas Kindle and Amy (née Hatcher), who married in 1785 in Ringwood. There is some debate about who else might have been the children of Thomas and Amy. The parish register includes the baptisms of Stephen and his brother Thomas, but there is strong circumstantial evidence that William Kendall (1794-1879) was also a son of Thomas and Amy.

The parish burial records are inconclusive, but it is possible that Amy died in 1837 aged 76, and likely that Thomas died in 1847 aged 86. That being the case, both would have been born about 1761. They are buried at the Ringwood Parish Church.

It's also possible – but unproven – that Thomas's parents were George Kindle and Mary (née Peckham), who married in 1756 in Sopley. Again, circumstantial evidence links Thomas with James, a grandson of George and Mary.

Update: see the results of DNA testing of descendants of Thomas, William and James.

I have posted my genealogy database at the Ancestry web site in three parts:

Descendants of George Kindle and Mary Peckham are here.

Descendants of Thomas Kindle and Amy Hatcher are here.

Descendants of William Kendall and Mary Mist are here.

Because they're a work in progesss, these trees are not public. But if you're related to any of these families, let me know and I'll be happy to grant access.
